 Vicar and Moses (109.8-12)

Vicar and Moses groups (the model shown in 109.8 - 12 in enamel colors) are after a Ralph Wood original that occurs most commonly in colored glazes. The color-glazed example below is impressed "62" and "Ra. Wood Burslem".

I struggled to find an enamel painted  example with an impressed number that could be attributed to Ralph Wood. When I did, it was on eBay and had been restored heavily. Here it is. The impressed "63" is on the reverse, and I have circled it in blue, but I doubt it will be visible in this format. Email me if you need the picture.

Worshiper/Peasant Praying (109.34 - 38)

Picture(c) Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

The figure of the peasant worshiping, as illustrated in Vol. 2, figs. 109.34 onward, is a Ralph Wood figure that also occurs in colored glazes, as illustrated alongside.  I will admit that the colored glazes allow mold details to be seen that enamel paint obscures. The base on this figure is so pretty--and yes, the enamel-painted figures are similarly formed, but it is difficult to detect it when it is painted over with enamels. I am not the biggest fan of colored glazes, but is this not a gorgeous figure?

Figures Decorated with Underglaze Colors

antique Staffordshire pottery figure, pearlware figure, Staffordshire figure Wesley, Myrna Schkolne, prattware figuretureThis fantastic figure is decorated in underglaze colors, and, sadly, did not make it into volume two because there is not a drop of enamel on him.
