I am Myrna Schkolne, and my expertise is in English enamel-painted pottery figures that were predominantly made in Staffordshire between 1780 and 1840. These figures are important artifacts, colorful time capsules that show us people, events, and activities that might otherwise have gone unrecorded because photography had not yet been introduced.
My first book, People, Passions, Pastimes and Pleasures: Staffordshire Figures 1810 -1835, tells the stories that are portrayed in the figures, and it is lavishly illustrated with large color photographs. My second publication, the four-volume Staffordshire Figures 1780-1840, attempts to catalog and attribute the vast array of pre-Victorian enamel-painted figures. My third publication, Holding the Past: The William Herbert and Nancy Hunt Collection of Early English Pottery Figures, showcases amazing figures in a premier private collection. My lavishly illustrated personal collecting memo, Obsession: the Myrna and Benzion Schkolne Collection of Early English Pottery, it is available in three volumes as a free download on the "Books" tab of my site mystaffordshirefigures.com. Also available there are free PDF booklets on the works of individual figure potters.
Although my publications together show over 6,000 figures, my work can never be complete or current. This website is an addendum to my books. It displays:
All material is presented on this site informally but in a manner corresponding to the layout developed for the four Schiffer volumes. Thus, to see additional figures of gardeners, look on the drop-down menu here for Volume 1, chapter 24 because the Schiffer books illustrate gardener figures in Volume 1, chapter 24. All enamel-painted figures have caption numbers to place them within the Schiffer volumes; all other figures have no caption numbers. The captions on this site are my informal notes, and I have not added heights unless they seem particularly pertinent. Mostly, this is intended to be a photographic record.
This site will be expanding slowly and incrementally. It will never be complete. I will add material as I can. Life would be dull without learning, and I hope that this site will help us all learn together. If you have a question or a figure or any information that will add to our collective knowledge, please contact me at [email protected].
P.S. You may enjoy www.mystaffordshirefigures.com, my site for collectors. I update the blog on that site routinely.

- Additional enamel-painted figures that have since come to light. Many of them are slight variations of figures in my books, and some are new discoveries.
- Color-glazed and underglaze-decorated figures. For practical reasons, figures decorated thus were not included in my books.
- Additional material pertinent to potters, attributions, and design sources.
